Macdeth Act II - an open letter to Berita Harian

I read with disbelief - and not to mention, a certain degree of disgust - your article titled "Kematian Teoh timbulkan pelbagai spekulasi politik" appearing in your newspaper yesterday.

It is a measure of the depth of the racialist pit in which you are and the extent of your warped mind that such article was published by you, a newspaper which, in your own words, "is able to stimulate the minds in pursuing information where information is the primary source of economical success" (my loose translation of "akhbar yang dapat merangsang minda dalam mengejar arus maklumat yang mana pengetahuan adalah sumber utama untuk kemakmuran ekonomi" as stated on your web site). But then again, coming from you, whose sister paper is the NST, I suppose, is not surprising. In fact, it should have been expected.

First of all, thank you for telling us that it was an "accident". You said, and I quote:

"Apabila mangsa kemalangan pula orang bukan Melayu, yang sebelumnya disiasat orang Melayu, bertambah hebatlah spekulasinya."

I thank you because earlier, we were all made to believe that it was a possible suicide. It seems that you know something which we, the stupid and gullible people of Malaysia, don't seem to know. As you have quite clearly and categorically labeled the incident as an accident, I would be grateful to death (pardon the pun) if you could fill me up as to how the accident happened; who were involved and why it happened. Did the deceased sleep walk while he was sleeping on the settee at 6.30am?

You seemed to take objection that this incident has been politicised. You also deemed it totally improper for some people to use the incident to gain political mileage. I am surprised at how shallow your journalistic power of observation is.

Allow me to tell you this. And I am going to use bold letters, just in case you miss the point. THIS IS A POLITICAL MATTER. The deceased was the political secretary of a DAP representative. DAP, the last time I checked, was a political party. And the last time I checked too, the deceased's boss was a member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly.

So, in the first place, it was, and still is, and will be a political matter. You cannot run from that fact.

You spoke as if no other party has politicised matters which have got nothing to do with politics in the past. Your political master has even gone to town using the Royal House as a political gimmick in Bukit Gantang. And how about Anwar Ibrahim's private life? Since when has a man's behaviour in bed or on a certain mattress, become a political capital? How about the act of buying cows for sacrifice on Hari Raya Aidil 'Adha, for the obvious benefit of the poor and impoverished? Is that political? And what about the call for the ISA to be abolished? Some people even said that ISA was a "Malay right"!

So please, spare us this seeming and sudden journalistic naivete. Spare us this whole stupidity. We are not stupid.

The next thing that I wish to say is this. Why are you bemoaning the fact that this "accident" has been politicised and used to gain political ground when it is obvious that such political maneuvering and posturing would not have happened if such "accident" had not taken place at all?

It is regrettable that in this day and age that our state agency could still treat citizens like some worthless piece of flesh and bones. It is like the state is a gangland, ruled and managed by fear, where dungeons and hooded men abound, ready to interrogate in the darkness of nights.

Why have you not asked why such "accident" ( I just love that word) had to happen in 2009 in our country? Why have you not championed the rights of the people, since you proudly proclaim that you are a newspaper which is able to stimulate the mind. Whose mind are you talking about? Your own mind? Are you stimulating the mind or the emotions? Or do you actually know the difference?

What I find most objectionable is your attempt at turning the issue into an anti-Malay leadership issue. While you bemoan the fact that this sad "accident" has turned into a political issue, it does not behoove you to shout and scream that the very same issue is a racial one. Two wrongs do not make one right.

Yes, the deceased is a Chinese man. But most and foremost is the fact that HE IS A MALAYSIAN. Every death in custody, regardless of race, creed and breed, will be a tragedy and will be treated as tragic by we, Malaysians. A. Kugan, an Indian, also died in custody, with horrific injuries or mark of injuries. Malaysians of all races denounced that. Malaysians of all races wanted the truth. When Nurin Jazlin Jazimin and Sharlinie Mohd Nashar were kidnapped, the whole Malaysia was outraged.

The whole Malaysia is outraged not because the victims are Indians, Chinese or Malays. Or are you too blinkered to know that? The outrage stems from the fact that the victims were seemingly treated in an inhuman manner, in a manner which is almost animalistic in nature. The whole Malaysia is grieving. Do you think only African American grieve the death of Michael Jackson? Or are you too busy with your racial study to notice?

And what is this about the non-Malays challenging the Malay leadership? In your own stupendous journalistic inquiry, you asked:

"Kenapa Menteri Besar Selangor, seorang Melayu, meragui kebolehan orang sebangsanya bertindak dengan tulus dan adil?"

Huh? My teenage daughter would ask, "wassup with you dude?" Or "can I have some of that thang (sic) which you are obviously smoking?"

First of all, all of us, and that includes those politicians whom you are accusing of politicising the "accident", do not have a clue on who the officers in charge were. Nobody knows their identity, let alone their races. Good God! What are you trying to do? Turn this into a Malay against the world issue? Quite obviously, no?

The truth of it all is this. If you still have no clue, let me tell you. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT RACE THE GUILTY PARTY IS (if anybody is guilty at all). The People will still feel outraged even if the party involved is a Ghanaian who works for MACC! Get that?

It is a shame. I was pleased to note on Sunday that the PM has taken the trouble to express his regret that someone has died, that a life has been lost. He even conveyed his condolences. He even sent his political secretary to visit the family. The DPM has now not discounted the establishment of a Royal Commission. Hishamuddin Hussein has undertaken to supervise the investigation personally. SUHAKAM has said it will commence an investigation. Whatever may be the result and effects of all these promises is unknown. But I would take them all on face value. I feel pleased with the humane approach. It just shows that at least, the PM, DPM and the Home Minister actually saw a tragedy above politics.

And it is a crying shame that you, Berita Harian, have to overshadow the fresh air of humanity emanating from our leaders by the publication of that article of yours.

Shame on you!

Dear Art,

Once again I salute you for speaking out lound and clear and denounce the like of Berita Harian in carry this shameless article. What is the use of PM sending condolence and DPM saying this and that but the Malay paper control by UMNO sing a shamelessly different tune.

This is only a classic case of double face by UMNO again. One end showing sympathy and at the other hand using the Malay media to fan the racist sentiment! After reading the article, what ever thing done by the UMNO leader jsut appear to be wayang and Cat cry over rats! They are the root of all the ills in Malaysia today, from the Sickening Police Force, AG Chamber, Judiciary till Malaysia Govt.

Our Dear PM please go out to the street and ask anyone, who believe in Police invetigation in this Case? Who trust MACC, Who trust the asurance of PM, DPM and Minister.

Everyone believe, Teoh has been Murdered, by all these sickeing politician and institution that has rot beyond repair.......... That's why every right Minded Malaysian is in tears to send off Teoh. Only the Mad Beriata Harian is shamelessly raising racial issue. Why not our Dear PM issue a statement to Condemn Berita Harian of Gantung their license.....

Hi Art

Scum will be scum and misdirect us with their own rabid brand of racism.

Teoh's death has NOTHING to do with RACE or Malay vs Chinese racial differences.

When I heard the news, I was so moved that I HAD to post a blog on it. I did not ask 'Were Malay officers involved?' or feel 'Oh my God, a Chinese man has died.' I was just shocked that another M'sians had died either in custody or following being in custody of, this time, the MACC!

I think the reactions of millions of M'sians would have been the same, race nothwithstanding!

The fact is the public services are staffed to th eextent of perhaps 80%-90% by Malays. So, however careful we are, our criticims are bound to hit the Malays. But that has nothing to do with being Malay per se or being targetted as such.

If the Govt, UMNO, Berita Harian, NST, Utusan etc are not happy with this, then its mete that the Govt takes immediate steps to redress the mix of staffing levels in public services.

But they can't have it both ways!

And what is the delay in prosecution by the AG over the Kugan matter? If ever there was an open and shut case, this is it.

May truth and justice prevail

Thank you Art. God bless you.

We need to wake up from our slumber, awake from our comfort zone, stand up and be counted. Lets not wait until they come for our very own before we act.

That's telling it as it is. We Malaysians are completely outraged at another senseless and unnecessary death in the custody of brutal authorities. We fear someone close to us can be the next victim. There is nothing racial about this. Berita Harian is a sick newspaper. No sympathy for the loss of a young life, just shameless spin and raising the racial card.

Anonymous said...

Dear Art,

You are an example for all Malaysians to emulate, who looked beyong race and religion.

Berita Harian is nothing but a tool of UMNO. They do not pursue information to the public but rather thrump up support for UMNO. They will use the race card to meet their objectives.

If such article appears in other the alternative medias, the Government would have arrested the writer/editor and put them under ISA.

The writer of Berita Harian should have been arrested and charged for being insensitive in writting such article. If the Government chose to keep quiet and do nothing about it then it shows they are condoning to Berita Harian's act.

Thank you Art.

BH's racial slant is utterly disgusting and sadly uncalled for.

We are still far away from being a better and united malaysia and with such venom comments coming from the MSM, i'm afraid they have done even more harm than good.

The systematic breakdown of the institution of powers is more telling than before.

It is imperative that an overhaul of these institutions is done without further delay. However, that can only be possible if a new government takes over.

Change we must and Change we will !

msdaffodils said...

You couldn't have said it any better!!!!

While Teoh's death def stinks of political motivation, the people's demand for justice and answer should not be categorised as such......

The MSM have trivialised our calls for heads to roll by terming it as "politicising" is downright insensitive and inhumane.....What if this had happened to any of their loved ones.......

Dear Art,

Let me clarify, they dont mean

"is able to stimulate the minds in pursuing information where information is the primary source of economical success";

what they mean is

"is able to massage the minds in pursuing misinformation where information is the primary source of political success"

While I applaud your message to them but it seems futile as clearly their objective is to please and popularise UMNO and manipulate simple Malay minds. It is sad that they are doing this to their own ethnic origin but such is life where the only ambition is power and greed.

Yesterday I heard Khir Toyo misleading the young Malay minds in a TV program proclaiming that it was the right of Bumiputra according to the constitution to get licences and advantage in business at the perogative of the KIng. We have discussed this before Art. 8 and Article 153(9) clearly outlines that business is to be on an equal basis however certain portions of licences and scholarships are to be reserved for bumiputras (if there is such a classification in the first place) at the perogative of the King. So when people go on TV and say things that are incorrect, what can you do but feel a kind of sadness for the audience and pity for the speaker who knows not what he speaketh.

Sad, very sad that it has come to this. I stayed in a Malay Kampong for a few years, I dont remember the Malays like that, they were kind and down to earth people and not the types of Khir Toyols that you see now.

(In true and typical underworld gangster style)Isnt it convenient to simply 'push off' and eliminate any form of evidence that can be brought against DAP UNDERWORLD GANGSTERS? (Seriously, you guys supporting the wrong side)

Wasnt it PR (DAP's LKS) who saw the oppportunity to HEARTLESSLY politicise TBH's sudden death? No politicising from UMNO I last checked...

Art, you write well, but there needs to be thinking behind it.

BH has always been racist. This paper and Utusan along with NST and Malay Mail had tried their best to sow racism in Sabah when PBS was in power in 1980s and early 1990s.

Sabah and Sarawak is a 'race blind' as we are one big family but Umno's entry in 1990s is gradually changing that. Now Sabah is fighting hard to preserve this racial harmony.

The saddest thing is there are just too many journalists in MSM like Zainul who can't tell a right or wrong.

bang zai said...

Basically, some Umno people are down right racists. Why? Are they fighting for the Malay survivals? Are they genuinely worry about the future political standings of the Malays? Are they sincerely believe that Malays Sultans are under extremely vulnerable so much so it has to be protected forever? The answers are NO No NO.

These bigots are actually fighting to enhance their very own political mileage and in returns, they will definitely enrich themselves beyond imaginations.

Dont believe me? Go and check your Umno MPs or ADUNs houses. Some of them look like palaces.

Perhaps they have to return some of their University certificates and go to some more recognised university to enrol again. We shall always short of good manpower to run this country if we only allow one race to hold all the key positions.May peace be with all Malaysians.

When a senior editor writing such an article in a tightly controlled media, I cannot rule out the possibility of political interference to have such article published.

Either it shows the country is rotten to the core, or some smart alex is trying to please their political master by smearing everyone else.

look at it from any angle, the article in BH is to me propaganda with political motive, and the writer cares not because someone died, he cares what will he has in return for such a favour done for his political master.

Thus, political motive to have the article published, then why accused others being political?

btw, ain't every aspect of our life politics?

Aside from that, if blogs are being monitored for racial sentiments by our dear Ministry of Information, I wonder if he caught and read the mainstream article as published. Am I the only reader who thinks that it's only fair that the person who wrote the article should be subjected to inciting racial hatred and punished accordingly?

Where should I report this to? The police? Or does anyone have direct access to the Ministry of Information and seek clarification?

Heeding the call of of En Zai's pen, let's not politicise, and start we shall by channelling his ever so "carefully scripted and edited" work to the right authority.

Obviously what was meant is 'ke-malangan' (misfortune, bad thing happening). It is shallowness indeed to make a mountain out of nothing. You can hold your breath on this one. The over reaction by the DAP is obviously an attempt at diverting attention from something deeper and sicker.

You seem to forget that Teo drove himself over - his car was parked in the basement. At no time was he under arrest.

You seem to forget that Tan Boon Wah was also being questioned through the night. You seem to forget that Tan Boon Wah too was with Teo at 6:30 am in the morning.

Answer me this : Tan Boon Wah gave a press statement. Did he say that at 6:30 he, Tan Boon Wah was also under "detention" and kept by the MACC? The answer is a definite no. Tan Boon Wah went home after sunrise.

How come, according to your illogic, Tan Boon Wah could go home free, but Teo was 'detained'? Shouldnt they both have been killed and thrown out the window?

I mean why did the MACC decide to kill one fellow and let the other fellow live? They were both racist, Chinese who did not deserve to be treated like humans (expanding on your illogic again about racism).

So what was the criteria for the MACC to let the racist Chinese Tan Boon Wah walk free but detain and then kill the racist Chinese Teo? Was Tan less racist Chinese than Teo? Do you see my logic here? I dont. But this is simply expanding on your illogic.

Here is another question : what was Teo singing the whole night? What did he tell the MACC? What did Tan Boon Wah tell the MACC?

For the sake of accuracy, overthrowing the BN Govt, saving the whales etc why not get Tan Boon Wah to say out in public what he sang at the MACC for seven hours or more? Then lets also see what Teo sang for ten hours?

The root of this matter lies in the DAP (Ronni, Ean Yong, Beng Hock, Boon Wah) usurping the RM500,000 funds assigned to the DUNs.

A complete machinery has been set up by Ronni, Ean Yong and Beng Hock to systematically siphon out money using various dummy companies, fake projects (usually not more then RM50,000 at a time).

Ronnis underworld friends helped by providing the dummy companies and the directors. Beng Hock processed the 'projects'. Ean Yong signed off on them, to be ratified if necessary by Ronni. Money flowed, some went to pay off the 'kongsi gelap' (who also had their various licenses approved) but most of the money went to Ronni, Ean Yong, Beng Hock and also the DAP.

The MACC was on to this game in early June - following complaints by Chinese contractors too. Hence Wee Choo Keong's outburst.

The amount is not big say about RM5.0 million total but the corruption was systematic. Teo's job was to process fake invoices, ok dummy companies for dummy projects. They took money out.

The question is who put the pressure on Teo that made him jump? Was it the MACC or was it Tan Boon Wah, Ean Yong or Ronni? They have found the handphone.

Ronni, Ean Yong and the DAP are going down this time. Big time. As I said you can hold your breath on this one. It wont be long.

Those who murdered Teoh will suffer for the rest of their lives. And when they die, they will burn in hell for eternity.

Dear Art,
Thank you. Great letter.

I wish we had people with higher intelligence and leadership qualities in places of high power and influence.

Idiots like him just need to be asked by the PM to take early retirement.

Dear Art,
Thank you for your fine example and stand. I salute you and you have my greatest respect for what you say. I stand like many others before knowing that racism should not have any place in our society nor in our hearts. I pray for justice to prevail or else our future generations are in great danger! God bless you!

“Well-placed sources and officials close to the MACC said Teoh was “manhandled and threatened” by investigators during a 10-hour interrogation as part of a political conspiracy to bring down opposition leaders, led by Anwar Ibrahim, and to implicate them for alleged misuse of funds.

“When he refused to do so, the officers dragged him to a window on the 14-story building and threatened to throw him out,”said the source who was not authorized to speak to media.”

Well, this piece from Malaysian Mirror is interesting. Check it out at:

We are all of one Race, the Human Race.
That is all that really matters.

Dear Art, your interpretation of the Berita harian article is totally different from mine. I do not see the tone of racism in the article merely telling the truth of what actually happens. My chinese friends from day one are being racist pointing finger directly to MACC and tthe Malay community.Sending me emails calling the malays pembunuh and trying the be the judge before the court.

I kept my cool and remind the that for every murder there must be a motive. If Teoh dies who would gain? MACC or the Triads??I told them that MACC previously ACA was never physical in their investigation. They got angry and post more racial article.

All over the non malay blogger's field are statement that sound and stink of racism. Berita harian merely state the fact that actually happen. The over reaction, the accusation even before investigation is carried out.

This means commenting on those who are racist will be deem racist.
Please read how racist these people are!! They accuse the malays pembunuh, lazy... stupid because Teoh died. Who actually kill Teoh?? What happen if he is killed by the head of Triad? Malays do not practice these sort of killing for political moods.Shame on you art....Who invoke racism?????

The poor guy who wrote it in Berita Harian was under orders from the higher ups.

You all should know that there is a big team working cohesively to distract everyone and concurrently sneak the BN into the seats of power in Penang, Selangor and Kedah.

They will spare Kelantan - see how UMNO is kissing the foot of Tok Guru through indirect means?

This is a big plot - even soem documents are leaked to bloggers to post anti-PR texts.

The multi-media commission can in fact identify who these bloggers are - after all they can track those who were 'anti-royalty' during the Perak government switchover saga.

But this time around, they are not doing it yet.

The same way, they are not tracing PI Bala, not concluding investigations into Kugan's death, not tracking Raja Petra...you name it lah...they have a lot of these things intentionally outstanding.

Dear brother-in-arms,
Many a word had been said about the mainstream newspapers that are the propaganda machines of the BN gomen in this blog.

If you are so vocal about the rubbish that they write, why are you all still buying NST, The Star, Utusan and Berita Harian?

Why are you still supporting their business while you can get a more balance picture for the internet?

Please lah, boycott the MSM newspapers; for if not then keep your peace and don't whine about it. If each and everyone of you stop buying these BN controlled newspapers, it will dent their sales in no small way. Its our way to tell them that we have had enough of their S%$# news.
Just DO IT !

Malaysia will have the highest number of X - files more than the drama series can make. Too many deaths and dissaperances unexplained.

Once u see them in tv or newspaper, the next time they are gone. vamoos! like thin air

Anyway, since berita harian is so supportive of ISA, can they set a good example to the rakyat by putting the slanderous/seditious/racist editor into the deep dungeons of kamunting? i heard the prawn noodles in kamunting are to die for.
